What is the Education Expenses benefit and how does it work?

This article clarifies the main questions surrounding the Education Expenses benefit.

Summary:

What is this benefit and what is the corresponding tax exemption?

This benefit allows you to pay for expenses related to education, either on your behalf or on behalf of someone on your household, and it is exempt from Social Security tax.

Where can I use the Education Expenses benefit?

You can use it in bookstores, stationery stores, schools, educational centres, universities and other educational institutions, as long as they have a VISA terminal.

In addition, you can issue an Education Voucher, indicating the amount and the partner establishment you wish to pay for, directly through your app.
You can use it however you like in places like Universidade Nova, Universidade Católica, and many more!

What are the payment options for the Education Expenses benefit?

You can pay directly with your Coverflex card at bookstores, stationery stores and educational institutions that have a VISA terminal and are duly registered. It is not possible to use the card to make purchases in department stores like Fnac, for example, since it is not possible to identify the purchased product.

However, as long as the reimbursement option was made available on your app by your company, you can ask for a reimbursement. Just make the purchase normally with cash or another card and upload the invoice to the app (always follow your company's rules regarding the benefits internal policy). Once approved by the company, the reimbursement will be sent to your IBAN within 2 business days.

In addition to the options mentioned above, you can still transfer an amount directly to an educational institution, as long as it is part of our network! To check partner institutions, click on the benefit in Coverflex > Benefits > Education Expenses, and then click on "school's network".

Now you can then search for available institutions by district or name. Click on "create voucher", under "Education voucher", to filter the options that allow for this payment method.

Why is there no payment option available for me?

The company can determine which payment options will be made available for employees' use. No having an available payment option on your dashboard means that your company has not included this option in your benefits package.

My balance is lower than the invoice amount. Can I still ask for a reimbursement?

Please check your company's benefits policy to answer this question, as the decision to accept/deny this type of reimbursement rests solely with the company.

What is the difference between Education Voucher and Childcare Voucher?

A Childcare Voucher is a social voucher used to pay for expenses for children from 0 to 7 years old (exclusively) enrolled in nurseries and kindergartens. This benefit is exempt from both Personal Income Tax (IRS) and Social Security tax.

Education Voucher can be used to pay for educational expenses such as tuition fees for study centres, language schools, universities, and also school materials. This benefit is exempt from Social Security tax.
